Beacon Village Developments: Bike Park and Sidewalks—What Does It Mean for the Valley?
Change is coming to Beacon Village. In the coming months, residents and visitors will notice two major projects taking shape: the new Beacon Park and the installation of sidewalks throughout the area. These projects are part of the county’s efforts to improve recreational spaces, pedestrian safety, and overall connectivity in the Valley.
The Facts
Beacon Park
The former Beacon Blanket Mill site is being transformed into a 4.7-acre multi-use outdoor space. Funded with a $4.5 million grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority (TDA), Beacon Park is designed to provide recreational opportunities and serve as a community hub for all ages.
Key features include:
A world-class bike park designed by Velosolutions, with trails and courses for all skill levels, including advanced features.
Walking trails around the park perimeter.
An event lawn and spaces for gatherings and activities.
Some jump lines are already taking shape, but construction is ongoing to complete the bouldering walls, walking track, pavilions, playground, stage, and 4,000-person event lawn. A soft opening is planned for May 2026, with a grand opening following in the summer.
Sidewalk Improvements
In addition to the park, nearly $1 million from the N.C. Department of Commerce will fund sidewalk repairs and extensions along Whitson Avenue through the Beacon Village commercial district. This grant is part of the Rural Economic Development Division’s small business infrastructure program, which supports essential public infrastructure and local economic recovery.
County officials and local business owners say the project will enhance safety, improve accessibility, and support the area’s long-term revitalization for families, visitors, and small businesses alike.
Community Input
While these projects are underway, the Swannanoa Small Area Plan is still in progress, offering residents a chance to share input about the future of the Valley. Public workshops have already been held, and the survey remains open. Participating now helps ensure that these and future developments reflect the community’s needs and priorities. Potential Impacts
Both the bike park and sidewalk improvements bring opportunities, but also changes, for the community:
Increased tourism: New recreational amenities may bring more visitors, which could benefit local businesses but impact traffic and parking.
Economic development: Improved infrastructure and amenities may attract retail, restaurants, or lodging, influencing the character of the area.
Community representation: Participation in the Small Area Plan survey and meetings is crucial to ensure a wide range of voices are heard.
Beacon Park and the sidewalks are reminders that change comes with both opportunities and challenges. By staying informed and engaged, residents can help shape the future of Beacon Village in a way that serves the community and preserves what makes the Valley special.
